Authorship Criteria
Advance Sustainable Science, Engineering and Technology (ASSET) follows the authorship recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Every person listed as an author must take public responsibility for the content of the article.
Who qualifies as an author
An individual may be listed as an author only if they meet all of the following criteria:
- Made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the work, or to the acquisition, analysis or interpretation of data;
- Drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content;
- Approved the final version of the manuscript to be published; and
- Agreed to be accountable for all aspects of the work, including its accuracy and integrity.
Contributors who do not meet the criteria
People who contributed to the work but do not meet all criteria (e.g. technical help, laboratory assistance, provision of materials, language editing, general supervision or funding acquisition only) should be named in the Acknowledgements section, with their permission.
Corresponding author
The corresponding author communicates with the journal on behalf of all authors, ensures that all listed authors meet the criteria above and have approved the submission and the final version, and that no eligible author has been left out. Contact details of the corresponding author (preferably an institutional e-mail) must be given in the manuscript.
Gift, guest and ghost authorship
Gift or guest authorship (listing someone who did not contribute) and ghost authorship (leaving out someone who made a substantial contribution, including professional writers) are not acceptable. Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors (see Generative AI Policy).
Changes to authorship
The list and order of authors should be final at submission. Any addition, removal or re-ordering of authors after submission must be requested by the corresponding author before acceptance, with a written explanation and a statement of agreement signed by all authors (including the author being added or removed). Changes after acceptance are allowed only in exceptional cases approved by the Editor-in-Chief. Disputes are handled following the COPE flowcharts.
Author contribution statement (CRediT)
Manuscripts with more than one author should include an Author Contributions statement before the References, using the CRediT taxonomy (e.g. Conceptualization, Methodology, Software, Validation, Formal analysis, Investigation, Resources, Data curation, Writing – original draft, Writing – review & editing, Visualization, Supervision, Project administration, Funding acquisition).
Example: A. Author: Conceptualization, Methodology, Writing – original draft. B. Author: Investigation, Formal analysis. C. Author: Supervision, Writing – review & editing.
