The Effectiveness of Using Loose Parts on Children’s Numeracy and Higher-Order Thinking Skills in Early Childhood Education

Numeracy and higher-order thinking skills are important foundations for cognitive development in early childhood. This study aimed to analyze the effect of using loose parts media on the numeracy and higher-order thinking skills of children aged 5–6 years. The study employed a mixed-method approach involving 15 children. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, observations, and interviews, and were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed an increase in numeracy scores from 78.00 to 94.00 and higher-order thinking scores from 75.00 to 96.00, with a strong effect category. Qualitative findings indicated increased children's engagement and exploration during learning activities. The study concludes that loose parts media are effective in improving children's numeracy and higher-order thinking skills. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the development of both skills through a single loose parts-based intervention and examining changes in these abilities using a mixed-method approach. Practically, loose parts provide a flexible and exploratory learning alternative that encourages children to use concrete objects, explore various possibilities, and develop their cognitive abilities.
